There was a long, dreadful silence.

“Would you like to explain to us, Mizuki...?” Xavier broke the silence calmly while prying Komui's fingers off Mizuki's shoulders.

She shakily took a breath. “Her name... it's Kuroi Taiyou.”

Hiro tilted his head to the side and awed recognition. “You mean... Kuroi Taiyou, as in Kuroi Taiyou, one of the best and most formidable hunter-nin alive? The one who helped create Project Tri-Angle? ”

Hotaru cast her eyes downward at the sound of “Tri-Angle”; Katsumi and Yukiko stiffened.

Slowly, Mizuki's shoulders unclenched and she nodded.

Kyou blinked. “She's the one that created and advocated all the corpse... arts?”

“Yes. It seems that she did too good of a job with corpses though. And here I thought that we'd killed her for good.”

Hihari blinked. “You got here earlier than expected, Kenji-san.”

Immediately, the Shadow trio (Xavier, Komui, and Mizuki) spun around to the source of the voice, inclining their heads respectfully. “Kurokage-sama,” Xavier acknowledged quietly, handing over the Shadow scroll.

“The genin teams?” Kenji inquired in a disinterested, almost lazy tone after shoving the scroll in his back pocket.

“Safe. May I ask who escorted you?”

“I came with Takashi and Yukio,” Kenji drawled. “Good enough?”

“Jesus, Kenji. You still shoulda brought your own escort, you practically hogged mine,” An annoyed voice came from behind him.

“Did not,” argued Kenji. “No self-respecting Kurokage needs an escort.”

The person Kenji was speaking to emerged from the dense forest into the clearing, two people trailing behind him. Though he was dressed a bit casually (dark and loosely fitting pants, a flak jack over a lightweight steel armor) and spoke casually, the military helmet with its straps hanging limply by his chin shadowed his face, making it look angular and serious. “Whatever you say,” the Raikage chuckled. “Just don't do it again.”

Turning back to the Sand and Glacier nin, he grinned in a friendly way. “I see you guys haven't changed at all, Hihari, Hiro.”

“I got a haircut,” Hiro replied just as cheerfully. “Does that count, Yukio?”

The lips of the female Storm nin behind Yukio twitched into a smile.

Yukio's grin got wider. “Oh, and my escorts, Mikan and Kazune.”

“Hey, it's nice to meet you all! Great village you have here. A bit hot, but it's nice.” Mikan, the female, was wearing a grin that couldn't rivaled Yukio's. She was already tugging off her fur-lined parka.

Kazune was more composed and calm, offering everyone a polite smile and greeting.

“And what about–” Hiro was beginning to say, before he was interrupted.

“I'm here,” the male grunted in an annoyed manner. “Geez you guys, you could've waited for me.” He emerged from the trees, like Kenji and Yukio, his hands stuffed into the pockets of his oversized jacket. He also had two ninjas following behind him.

“Sorry Takashi,” Kenji smirked. “Couldn't resist.”

At Kenji's comment, Takashi promptly made an obscene hand gesture back at him.

“Mizukage-sama,” a tall teenager in a bird mask interrupted quietly.

“Sorry Spyke,” Takashi grinned ruefully at the masked Mist nin, echoing Kenji's words. “Couldn't resist.”

Katsumi blinked at the odd name. “Spyke?” She repeated.

“You can explain, Tsuchi,” Takashi said, gesturing to the other ninja that had escorted him.

Tsuchi offered a brief smile in greeting to everyone. “It's a code name,” he explained calmly. “Spyke goes on a lot of missions that require the use of information, and he has to be careful about who to trust and whatnot.”

“Probably wanted to show him off in Sand,” Yukio grinned.

“Back to business,” Takashi said briskly. “What the hell happened?”

Hiro smiled patiently. “Let's head back to the village first.”

“We're dealing with missing-nin,” Hiro said as soon as the kages were seated around the large round table in Hiro's building. “Or maybe a group of them. We do know that Kuroi Taiyou is involved.”

“What about the chuunin exams?” Hihari asked.

“That's not of importance right now,” Kenji said. “They'll probably be canceled with all this crap going on anyways.”

“I have a theory,” Hiro said calmly. “I think that these missing-nin... they might be trying to complete Tri-Angle.”

“Impossible,” Takashi cut in. “All the Project information has been scattered and lost. There's no way.”

“Don't you forget where they put the remains of the project in, Takashi?” Yukio's eyes lit up as well. “In each of the village scrolls. So that's why.”

“Then none of us are safe,” Takashi said coldly. “if they wage war on all five of us simultaneously. We know nothing about them, and they, being former ninja our ours, may know everything about us.”

Hiro smiled dangerously. “Then we will fight.” He stood up. “You forget, Takashi, that we are kages. We have been chosen leaders for a reason, and we will prove that. We fight.”

And the five leaders followed Hiro's actions, their eyes set with a cloaked determination, getting ready to reveal their power.

She sits on the same cliff, holding the remains of her porcelain mask gently.

Suddenly, she stands up, hearing only what she could hear.

They're calling for her.
