III : Fear

A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic.

Hotaru jumped, dodging a spray of blood. “What the–”

Something flashed through Hiro’s eyes. “The civilians…”

Haruka jumped out of the window and shouted something that they didn’t understand, unsheathing a bladeless katana.

However, Hihari seemed to have understood perfectly. “A team of Glacier chuunin traveled with me and Haruka. I asked them to surround nii’s office, just in case… I was right.”

“I apologize,” Xavier murmured. “We did not bring any reinforcements, only our surviving genin teams.”

Mizuki poked her head out of the window, her dark eyes scanning the village. “Good…”

“What’s so good about civilians getting attacked?” Komui asked blankly.

Kyou nodded thoughtfully. “The exams are going to start in the arena over there,” he said. “You can already see the majority of the Sand village gathered inside. This means that we only need to dispatch the main shinobi teams to the arena and have little groups of backup going through the streets and bringing other civilians to safety.”

“Less talking, more action!” Haruka jumped through the window once more, her bladeless sword now an intricate, icy blade covered with blood. “Katsumi, Yukiko, and Itami seem to be faring well but they’re outnumbered. C’mon!”

Hiro whistled in awe. “That’s a lot of missing-nin over there.”

“That’s not good,” Kyou said flatly, easily slitting the throats of a couple nin that tried to break through the protective circle (Hotaru, Kyou, and Haruka) to get to Hihari and Hiro.

“Haruka, Hotaru, Kyou. You can stop that now,” Hiro said casually. “We’re kages, we fight as well. Go to other places and make sure the civilians are safe.” Even as he was talking, the sandy ground opened up in the middle of a group of opponent ninja, swallowing them alive.

Hotaru looked like she was going to protest, but followed Kyou to the other end of the village. Haruka, as well, went off to assist some Sand chuunin that were injured.

A line of missing-nins started dropping dead with gargled screams of pain, holes where their throats should be. Xavier appeared at the end of the line, flicking blood off his kunai. “Komui, please. Take this seriously.”

The said teen snorted, slamming his palm into a poor victim of his, causing the missing-nin to choke up blood. “Bah. A person of high importance like me shouldn’t be killing weak underlings like these.”

“All of you, duck!”

Hihari was flying in the air, icy wings protruding from her back. Even as she swooped down, enemy nin froze in their tracks due to intense cold. Mizuki took this as an opportunity to finish them off easily with poisoned senbon while Hihari shot ice arrows with so much intensity that one arrow even pierced completely through one ninja into another.

Slowly, the first group of intruding ninja dwindled. Remainders of the streets and some buildings lay on the ground, destroyed.

“I’ve never seen such a large group of missing-nin band together like this,” Hihari commented, her ice wings finally melting into a clear puddle of water on the ground.

“They weren’t that powerful, though. No one of high importance,” Kyou said quietly.

Hotaru groaned. “Great.”

Mizuki stared off into the direction Hotaru was looking at. “There’s another group… perfect. Just… perfect.”

“But hey,” Komui commented mildly. “Don’t you notice anything… different about them?”

A small pause.

“Holy…” Hihari breathed. “It… can’t be.”

“It… is…” Kyou said quietly.

The new group of ninja approaching had glazed looks in their eyes, as if they were asleep with their eyes open. Some had stitches on them, as if their whole bodies were sewed together. And… their headbands…

“They’re the dead genin teams that disappeared,” Xavier said quietly. “We cannot attack, even if they are… deceased.”

“It’s… impossible.” Mizuki stumbled back a bit. “The only people that probably know the art of corpses are probably hunter-nin and a few other Shadow ninja…”

“So what are we going to do?” Haruka asked quietly.

“Hihari-sama!” Three girls jumped from the roof of a worn building, landing with perfect grace in front of Hihari.

A teenage girl stepped forward, her black, waist-length hair coming out of its low ponytail. “We found the source of where all the enemy ninja are coming from.”

“I’m staying behind to take care of my animals,” a girl with red shoulder-length and pitch-black eyes announced, holding up a small rabbit carefully.

Hihari nodded. “Alright, will do, Itami.” The Hikage sheathed her katana and looked at Itami’s eyes, which were changing from black to a calmer brown. “And calm down. Don't get so... excited.”

Itami nodded. “Will do.” She looked back. “Katsumi, Yukiko… you can go without me, right?”

The girl that told Hihari the information, Yukiko, nodded. “Yeah. We’ve got it under control.”

Katsumi stepped forward, her dog ears and tail disappearing slowly. “Aa. This way.”

Hiro looked surprised. “Oh, Katsumi’s one of those…?”

Haruka nodded. “Yes, Hiro-sama. But not now. We have someone to confront.”

A cloaked figure wearing a mask stood a couple of yards from where they were hidden (in trees, with their chakra masked). Pale, feminine hands were stretched out. Upon closer scrutiny thin strings of chakra were coming from her hands.

A small laugh came from her. Small, but hysterical.

“Now!” Hiro whispered.

The group, which was positioned in different trees that surrounded the cloaked figure, launched weapons at the person, who miraculously managed to dodge all of them.

“It’s not surprising,” Xavier murmured when Hihari seemed shocked at the fact that her ice arrow missed. “If she can control a large amount of corpses that well, she must be a shinobi of high level.”

However, the chakra-enhanced kunai thrown by Mizuki managed to hit the mask square in the middle.

Slowly, the porcelain mask crumbled and fell to the ground and the woman cursed vehemently. Quickly, she disappeared into the shadows and melted into it.

Hotaru made a noise of disappointment. “She got away.”

“I… know that woman…”

“What?!” Komui stared at Mizuki, who seemed like she was in shock. “How?!”

“Calm down, Komui,” Hihari barked. “Mizuki, how do you know this woman?”

Mizuki took a deep breath shakily. “She… was my jounin teacher.”
