I : Say Goodnight.

Tonight will be your last night.

He flew quickly through the trees, almost flying off the branches effortlessly. Suppressing another coughing fit, he stopped to rest on a branch.
He was careless. The branch snapped and he was tumbling down forty feet.
“Damn–!” A torrent of kunai and shuriken flew toward him; he retaliated by pulling out a kunai of his own and deflecting the shower of weapons. However, he didn’t escape unscathed.
Wincing, he fell onto the forest floor. He knew he was reaching his limits.
And so did they.
“I don’t believe this is a nin from the feared Shadow village,” a voice scoffed, high and feminine.
“Patience, this is only an underdog. We must wait.” Another voice, a male’s.
The dying Shadow nin coughed blood, the red liquid splattering across his vest and face. Blood was already matted in his dark hair, and the pieces of cloth he had wrapped around the hole in his side were already soaked.
‘I mustn’t… let them… have the…’ His shaking hand reached into his pocket.
The female let out a shriek of laughter. “Don’t even think about it, fool. You’re no match for us. You’re dying. We all know it. Give up the scroll willingly and I just may consider killing you quickly.”
The Shadow nin coughed, and spat blood near the shadows, at the woman’s feet. “Rot in hell.”
A low growl. “Why, you scum–”
“Patience. This is the typical Shadow shinobi. Staying stupidly, stubbornly loyal.” The dark voice was directed toward the Shadow nin now. “Do not be foolish. Give up the scroll.”
A curse escaped the Shadow shinobi’s bloodied lips. “Die.”
There was a small pause.
Then–
“I guess we have no choice.” A small sigh. “Now you may kill the fool. Be sure that blood does not harm the scroll. It is fragile, remember that.”
He was dying, but… “I will never let Kurokage-sama down…” More blood flew from his mouth, his teeth stained crimson as he gritted them. His broken wrists moved into rapid handsigns.
Eyes narrowed from the shadows. “Oi, what are you doing–?!”
All the spilled blood mixed with the shadows, creating a translucent crimson griffin.
“Go,” the dying man croaked hoarsely, extracting a small scroll with shaking hands and tossing it to the griffin. The scroll landed in the creature’s mouth and it swallowed; the scroll bobbing up and down in the mass of blood.
The blood summon took flight, soaring above the treetops. The female let out an angered scream, launching a torrent of kunai and shuriken at it but they merely passed harmlessly through it.
The Shadow nin smiled contentedly. The scroll was safe… but… something didn’t feel right…
He looked down at his arm and screamed.
Or… what was left of his arm anyway. It was now a mere stump of bloody flesh, blood spurting from it.
“What did you DO?!?!”
A maniacal chuckle from the female. “You’ve just made my job much harder. Die.”
He blew up with a last shriek of pain, flesh and guts and blood flying everywhere, painting the forest a morbid red. The Shadow forehead protector lay on the ground, stained with blood.
A pale hand reached out and grabbed the still pulsating heart from a now blood-stained tree.
“Smear it splendid, honey.”

Next chapter: The scroll arrives at the most unlikely place! And what’s this? Pointing fingers already?
