Chapter 4: The Lady of the Shadows
- Spoiler:
Doragon closed his emerald eyes as the rugged rocks came closer to his diving body. Focusing his Chakra into hands and feet, his arms moved skillfully through the air, leaving a streak in the sky. Doragon flipped, both of his bare feet leaving, twin streaks of green. Quickly, a ball of streaks was woven with him inside. It speeded towards the water. Slowly the sphere faded away, he crouched, beautiful wings unfurled from his back. They quivered, shaking off a black substance. He soared towards the sky.
A shrieking sound clawed at the air. Doragon was horrified as the wings began to crack on his ascent. They shattered, a luminous powder swirling in the wind. He began to fall, without a backup plan.
Doragon felt something wrap around him, stopping his fall. The waves swirled below him, eagerly waiting for the chance to swallow him alive. He saw something ivory wrapped around him. Bones wrapped his body, sharp edges pointed away from him. A chain of bones led from him to over the cliff. The waves below him receded, someone had saved his life. The infamous weapon itself, Chuusuu, he thought, remembering the peculiar tales that clung to this weapon.
“1, 2, 3!” Rin yelled, a surge of groans and strength pulled on Chuusuu. A figure felt the edge of their hoodie, a lock of pure white hair peeking out. The figure sighed before yanking on the handle once, a flood of strength traveling through the bones. A trembling hand clawed at the ground near the edge of the cliff. Doragon dragged himself over the edge, panting. The girls quickly let go of the rope, the bones releasing their grip on Doragon, sliding back towards the handle that the figure held, coiling.
“Kirarin, you can’t stay long, you have a mission of your own to do soon.” Deddo said. Kirarin lowered her hood; short white hair tumbled around the face of a girl with piercing blue eyes, adjusting to the glowing sun.
“Do you need help?” Kirarin asked Doragon, smiling.
“You both are twins?” Rin asked Deddo, her eyebrow raised slightly.
“Fraternal,” Deddo mumbled, her eyes gazing at the clear sky.
“No thank you,” Doragon replied to Kirarin. She walked away, her hoodie rustling in the breeze.
“Ryuujin-sama said that we would start our escort mission here.” Usagi broke the silence, perched on a withering tree, scanning a scroll. A quiet smile brushed her face as the breeze blew shook the branches, leaves scattering around her. A strong gale suddenly broke the tranquility.
“Ah!” the wind tipped Usagi over, making her fall out of tree. The entire group sweatdropped as a boy and a girl stumbled onto the cliff.
“Who the hell are you?” Doragon snarled, ready to attack.
“My, my, a ninja should not talk that way to someone obviously of higher status, especially when that person is who the ninja escorts.” The boy replied.
“Soumen, shush you!” the girl said. Doragon felt the urge to murder.
“Let me speak, woman!” Soumen yelled at the girl. Tears began to form in her eyes. Guilt washed over Soumen.
“I’m sorry, Hana.” Soumen apologized, looking down. Hana stuck her tongue out.
“Works every time!” Hana yelled, sticking her tongue out.
“Why, you little-“ Soumen mumbled.
“To the ship!” Hana shouted, racing off. Soumen sighed before following. The rest of the group was confused. Usagi shook leaves out of her tangled hair before taking a deep breath. She quickly ran after the fleeing pair. The others followed suit except for Kirarin.
“This is my stop,” she said, before disappearing in a flash of white light.
“I will kill Naikage-sama,” Deddo mumbled under her breath, “He never told us that we would escort multiple people.” Usagi was lost in thought as lifeless leaves crunched under her feet.
A woman watched from a tree, her face hidden by swirling shadows as she watched with interest. A large grin escaped her lips, sharp teeth revealing themselves. A laugh shook the branches as the leaves quivered in fear.
Chapter 5: A Festival of Blood
- Spoiler:
Hana giggled as she rode regally on Soumen’s back.
“Acting brother and singing sister, prodigies of our time, together at last!” Soumen yelled out with pride.
“I think he’s on something.” Deddo mumbled as Usagi thought about what happened on the ship.
Rin leaned over the slippery rail as the smell of sea salt swirled in the air. The trip to Storm Country was going to be an easy ride as they traveled to the Village Hidden Behind the Shadows. Deddo studied a scroll in here hands as Doragon lifted up a pedant, hanging from a torn, leather chain.
“A special crystal that relays messages. Very rare, in fact, I doubt a message is even on it. I can replace the chain.” Doragon droned as he pulled out a dagger and cloth. Skillfully, he cut a long strip from the satin-like fabric, and quickly looped it around the pendant before handing it back to Usagi.
“The only way to activate this type is for blood to come in contact with it. But this one is damaged. Good luck with that.” He quickly left.
The scene replayed in Usagi’s head as she rubbed the pendant anxiously.
“The Festival of Lightning, a beautiful time in the Storm Village, isn’t it?” Rin skipped in front of the group, her eyes filled with glee. Deddo pricked her finger with a kunai, uninterested. Onyx blood eased slowly out of the cut.
Usagi’s daydream snapped as a girl walked in front of the group. A mirror image of Usagi as a yukata stood before them. They stood there, all of them in shocked as the girl flipped her hair, running off giggling. Usagi chased after her down the road.
“No, Usagi, wait!” Rin cried out, following her. Two dogs leaped in front her, baring their teeth as they growled and snapped angrily at her. She stopped, Usagi growing smaller and smaller into the distance.
She must be enjoying this, Usagi thought. Confusion dictated her mind, questions flooding her soul, squirming and jostling for more space. The girl’s laughter faded into an eerie silence as she disappeared into an alley. Usagi hesitated, gazing into the darkness before inhaling deeply and running in.
The air grew oppressive with each step she took, fragile rays of light breaking, surrounding in her in utter darkness. Something is wrong here, Usagi’s instincts whispered. Gentle flapping came from a luminous butterfly, fleeing for its life. Time seemed to slow as the last bits of light from the butterfly revealed something in the girl’s yukata, hunched over as the cloth ripped, a low growl haunting the air.
The glow faded, leaving Uasgi in darkness, the sound of ripping and bones dislocating and snapping into new places frightening her. Slowly, a silence suffocated the air as Usagi gripped a kunai, trembling.
“I have you now, my prey.” A cackle filled the air.

Ryuujin sighed at the tower of papers on his desk. Lackadaisically, he plucked a paper from the mass and started to skim it. His face went pale. The report depicted of a strange murder in the forest in the Country of the Wind. The details confirmed his fears. No, not now, not at this time, he thought.
“C-could… it be her?” he asked himself.
Chapter 6: Fatal Haunt
- Spoiler:
Deadly jaws snapped at a wide eyed Rin, saliva slowly dripping away from the sharp teeth of the dogs. A shuriken, tipped with black blood, impaled the ground at the feet of the dogs, startling them; a sizzling sound confused them as the blood touched the ground.
“These are not ordinary dogs.” Rin whispered, her hands forming hand signs slowly. Decaying hands erupted from the sizzling earth, seizing the dogs, wrapping around their bodies.
“Summons,” Deddo answered, “I say we get rid of them, I want to hear them yelp.” A malicious glint appeared in Deddo’s amethyst eyes, causing Doragon to sweat. Rin sighed; two of her fingers twisted together, the hands receding back into the ground, carrying the terrified summons with them. Doragon turned to the others.
“This is serious; a fellow nin has been separated from our group. Something is happening and her life is in danger, if she is not dead already.” His eyes flitted from the group to the resting place of the dogs.
“The course of action is to launch a searching mission for Usagi. I will protect Hana and Soumen with my blood and soul.” Deddo plucked the shuriken from the ground.
“I knew my blood would come in handy one day.” She quickly stuffed the shuriken back into her bag, slung across her shoulders. Rin and Doragon nodded, disappearing as the sun shone overhead.
*****************************
Usagi crashed into the wall, blood trickling down her chin. A rough laugh filled the heavy air. She could feel the warmth of thick blood running down her cheek, wincing at the searing pain of a gash on her cheekbone.
“You’re boring me,” the girl whined, “I want to hear you scream and fight back like the pathetic excuse for a moving pile of meat you are.” A clawed foot collided with Usagi, making her collapse onto her bruised hands and knees. The foot came back for more, grinding Usagi’s head into the ground. There is no way my spirit is leaving here without a body tonight, Usagi promised herself. The girl laughed again, Usagi’s chance.
Usagi grabbed the foot, scales digging into her hands. In a dual movement, she swept the ground with her foot, blowing out the girl’s other leg from underneath, causing the girl to fall. Usagi jumped into the air, her nails digging into the foot, still in her grasp. With all of her strength, she swung the girl by her leg, into a wall, causing it to crumble into pieces. Usagi limped out of the alley.
An arm dragged the girl out of the alley slowly, scales receding into her skin, revealing bruises. Tangled hair veiled her face. Usagi’s eyes opened wide.
“She wasn’t supposed to live after that impact.” She whispered to herself. The girl stood up, staggering backwards as her legs trembled. Suddenly, the girl charged Usagi, with surprising speed, ramming into her, making both fall backwards.
Blow by blow, the girl slashed at Usagi. Usagi began to fade in and out of consciousness, before feeling a heavy weight thud onto her. She opened her eyes sluggishly as darkness enveloped the girl’s unmoving body. Two kunai stood triumphantly from the girl’s back.
A figure ran over to Usagi, silvery hair gleaming in the light.
“Usagi!” the figure cried, one hand turning purple as the other opened a bottle of medicine. The world began to turn black.
