Chapter 1

The words echoed through her head as her feet lightly padded on the soft mud. She gripped a kunai tightly as her scratched knuckles turned white. The memory played, paused, rewinded, and played again. “There are many things you should do for your country…” the Naikage rang towards a group of eager, naive genins who were fresh out of academy school.
Senbon whizzed by her, nicking her ear, jolting her back into the painful reality before she drifted off again. “As a shinobi, you are meant to protect…” those were words etched into her heart. She pushed the painful memories out of her head as she neared the destination. The Village Hidden Behind the Dead was growing closer and closer to her.
She painfully forced chakra into her hand as she neared the wall and blew it apart with a single punch. “To serve…” stinging tears flooded her eyes and ran down to her mouth, comforting her with their salty warmth. She knew she wasn’t going to live another day, not as a rogue ninja, not after the conspiracy she learned. They all wanted her head.
“Dying for your village is a great honor…” she knew her Chakra was beginning to run low, most it was used in the punch and the rest was feeding on the barrier she put around the mass on her back, something that she would and will die for.
So close, she thought, releasing her eyes when she saw a dying flame in a lamp, only a mile away. The flame trembled, accomplishing little in its short life span. She detached the mass from her back, leaving the barrier up. She knew she couldn’t make it. She nipped her thumb and made precise hand signs, summoning a decaying dog with its mouth sewn shut, bloody and dirty bandages wrapped over its empty eye sockets, rose from the mud.
My last summon, she thought, the tears welling up again. “Take it for me, please.” The dog nodded and lifted its neck stiffly, revealing a crooked mouth on the soft part of its neck. The mouth opened, a foul smelling abyss inside. She shifted the blankets covering the bundled mass. The glowing face of a baby girl, placed in under a sleeping jutsu to lower the chance of both of them dying, peeked from the blankets. The ninja slowly placed the baby on the ground. The dog swallowed her whole and ran off towards the destination. She smiled slightly knowing her child was safe, not caring about the deep wound on her side, bleeding heavily.
“Will you die protecting someone or something?” the words whispered in her head. She smiled weakly, tasting blood in her mouth. Looks like I did, she thought, before the world span and turned black.
Chapter 2
- Spoiler:
Usagi snapped a thin twig in half and examined it closely before tossing to the ground in complete boredom. Dead, she thought, Why is everything is this gloomy village dead? She pouted before adjusting the loose forehead protector strapped to her thigh.
"This place is so drab." she whined to herself, "Only dull brown and gray."
How she longed to stand in a vibrant field of blooming flowers with her red-streaked hair flowing the wind, a cherry blossom in it. Her big pale eyes went starry as she daydreamed. She clutched a withered flower close to her heart.
A smooth pebble bounced off her tan hand. Startled, she scanned the around before finally looking up towards the trees. A girl sat on a branch that looked like it was ready to snap. Her sweet smile complimented her black red-rimmed eyes. Silver curls bounced around as a green kimono flowed in the gentle breeze.
Usagi blinked several times and rubbed her eyes, unbelieving. The girl's smile turned into a wide grin.
"Nice to see ya" the girl greeted.
"Rin!" Usagi yelled.
Usagi leaped towards the branch, filled with joy. Rin's eyes went wide as she realized what would happen next.
"Oh no-" Rin whispered.
Usagi's foot touched the branch, which broke in an instant. They fell in a confused frenzy before landing in a huddled heap.
"I'm okay!" Rin jumped up and dusted herself off, "I only lost a little bit of my sanity..."
"Like you had any in the first place!" Usagi teased, placing Rin in a headlock and ruffling her hair.
"Stop it!" Rin screeched.
"Ey..." a bored voice floated through the air.
Rin and Usagi froze.
"Deddo?" Rin asked.
"Eh?" she answered. She pushed her messy black hair out of face, straightening her crimson pants.
"Deddo" shouted Rin.
Deddo lifted a kunai.
"Touch me and I will make sure that it is your blood that paints the walls red." threatened Deddo, her purple eyes blazing.
Usagi sighed, feeling defeated. Deddo felt her onyx necklace.
"Naikage-sama wants to speak to you, Usagi." Deddo droned, bored out of her mind.
Usagi stood tall at hearing Deddo's words. Rin slouched next to her.
Deddo smiled slightly, "Looks like someone is excited," she disappeared as a cloud strolled by the soft sun.
Usagi looked to Rin who gave a quick nod and disappeared as well, leaving behind a green rose. Usagi ran down a rugged path quickly towards the Naikage's tower.
She stopped at the Naikage's door and pushed it open with little force. A pitchblack darkness coated everything with a heavy film. She inhaled deeply, feeling the darkness fill her lungs, weighing her down.
Not a sound was heard as she felt the gentle flapping of a cloak behind her. The cold metal of a sharp dagger pressed lightly against her throat. Usagi didn't budge as the cloaked person leaned in close towards her, with their mouth near her ear. A relaxed voice filled the room with a single whisper.
"Didn't I tell you not to come in here without knocking first, eh, Usagi?"
Chapter 3: Entourage
- Spoiler:
Usagi was paralyzed as the dagger was frozen in its place; her life was dependent on the steady hand of somebody else. The chilling blade inched away from her tender throat. Usagi felt the urge to get away as far as possible from the figure.
"You need to learn to respect privacy, Usagi," the figure whispered, "I could have killed you."
Usagi could tell that the figure was making hand signs with their free hand, the other one clutching the dagger. The heavy darkness faded away, leaving the room naked. The place was immaculate, everything stacked neatly and in its place. The scene had lightened as the person sheathed their dagger.
"Relax, Ryuujin" Usagi said.
Ryuujin lowered the hood of his cloak. His golden eyes blinked. His long midnight hair tumbled down his back.
"This is your warning," he said sternly. He disappeared, leaving Usagi confused. She gently massaged her throat.
“Deddo said that you wanted to see me,” she mumbled, still rubbing her neck.
“Yes,” his voice floated from all directions. Usagi was getting annoyed.
She fiddled with the hem of her shirt to keep from cursing out loud. She cleared her throat, pushing away her anger.
“So what is it this time?” her voice slightly agitated.
There was a pause. If he doesn’t show himself now, I’m leaving, she thought.
“The reason I called you here was for a C ranked mission,” the voice drifted from the other side of the room. Usagi turned around, scanning for the source. Ryuujin sat in a chair, engraved with skulls.
“Your mission is to escort a very important person into the Village Hidden in the Darkness.” Ryuujin linked his fingers, leaning over.
“Who does this person happen to be?” Usagi asked
“That is classified,” he replied, Usagi rolled her eyes; “Your team will be Deddo, Rin, and Doragon.”
“Doragon, who is that?” she raised an eyebrow.
“A talented genin,” he replied. Usagi could tell that Ryuujin was not going to tell more. Usagi sighed, slouching over.
“Hai,” she groaned. She picked up a golden picture frame. A faded picture of a man, who looked very similar to Ryuujin, stared back at her. This must be his father, she thought. She gently put down the photo before disappearing.
Ryuujin sighed, relieved. His hair slowly turned indigo strand by strand, his eyes slowly turned deep crimson. A baby mouse cowered in the corner as it watched in horror as Ryuujin morphed into something horrible. The mouse turned its head away and watched the wall, where Ryuujin’s shadow grew more and more frightening.

Golden rays of sunshine bathed Doragon as he stood over the cliff, his back against the wind. Golden hair whipped his face as the frosty caps of the waves crashed against the rugged rocks far below him. Inhaling deeply, he jumped from the cliff, diving towards the icy depths below.
