I've noticed that. They think that just because they screwed their life up bad before, that they can't change it. Which isn't true, they can change it. It may be harder than it looks, but they can change it.

I just like history, so my family history is interesting to me

Exactly. Some things may have been out of their control, like a hurricane destroying their house, but they shouldn't be brooding over it. They should try and build their house again, preferably away from hurricane country.
