C'sel was from an important family in the dragon realms. As such, her scales were always polished, her jewel hoard was well stocked, and her belly was always full. She was rather rebellious, a common trait to red dragons. Often, she flew away from her home just to prove to the humans, and her parents, that she could do whatever she pleased.
Today was a day she had chosen to prove such freedom. She flew several leagues to the north. She loveed the northern areas of the country. There were many crystal clear lakes that dotted the emerald green country side. The mountain range to the west was always a lovely amethyst color against the sapphire sky. They were even lovelier when the sky turned blood red while the sun set behind them.
C'sel landed beside one of the lakes and took a refreshing drink after her long flight. She examined her scales, to ensure there were no bugs stuck between them. They gleamed a light red color, just as they did after she washed them. Finding the golden sun in the sky, she judged sunset to be only a couple hours away. "Just enough time to find some humans to scare," she thought happily.
Her country, Dra'c as her people called it, was the only to have dragons. Other realms has dwarves and elves and ogres and such, but only this one had the majestic dragon. More for her own amusement than to prove anything, she often flew to the east of the pastures and over the border into the neighboring country. Few humans ever made direct contact with Dra'cians, the humans in the country. She exploited their ignorance and often had fun with them. She would burn some crops and roast and eat a few cows during her visits. The humans would grab torches and other useless items and try to defend against her. That was when she would land, knock over a few trees and roar, and then take off again to return to the pasture in time to watch the sun set.
"Stupid humans," she chuckled as she winged her way toward the border. "They are intellectual brutes and nasty things that talk in voices that are too high to be healthy. Disgusting things, the lot of them. The foulest of all creatures."
She finally reached the edge of the country and paused in the air a moment. A magical barrier divided the countries, ensuring that no one who had not been given a border pass, a small blue magical stone, could get through. This was always C'sel's least favorite part of the trip. She did not have a pass, but her scales held many of the same properties as the magical stones, so she could make it through without much injury. Taking a deep breath, she charged through the barrier.
Pain erupted in her left wing as she passed through. Roaring in pain, she tried to land, but could not get her wing to work properly. She attempted in vain to control her landing. With a final roar, she plummeted to the earth below. She tried to raise her head from its place in the grass and look around. A moment later, the pampered young dragon lay unmoving in the field.♱¸¸·´¯`·.¸¸♱¸¸·´¯`·.¸¸♱¸¸·´¯`·.¸¸♱¸¸·´¯`·.¸¸♱¸¸·´¯`·.¸¸♱¸¸·´¯`·.¸¸♱¸¸·´¯`·.¸¸♱¸¸·´¯`·.¸¸♱
C'sel opened her eyes slowly, acutely aware of the pain in her wing. It was dark out yet she saw a light ahead of her and heard running water somewhere to her left. She groaned and tried to sit up, only to fall back to the ground.
"Woah, there, ma'am," a voice said from the darkness. "You are in no condition to be trying to move, just yet."
C'sel snarled grumpily. "Human," she thought unhappily. "Why a human?" She raised her head slowly and looked for the thing that was trying to tell her what to do. She did not have to look long before his voice told her that he was near her wings.
"I'm sure that your right wing must be in some pain, right now, seeing as you're laying on it," the human said. His voice was bordering on bearable as far as his pitch went, but it was still incredibly annoying to C'sel. How dare he speak to her, a dragon of royal blood! "I found you out here when I was looking for the source of that cloud of dust, earlier. I suppose it was caused by your rough landing. Your left wing looked like it was burned. Your scales seemed to have been torn off or something." He put something cold on C'sel's wing and spread it around. The pain started to recede, slightly. "They are truly marvelous scales. Unfortunately, some were knocked off. I gathered as many as I could. They're sitting over by the fire. I didn't know if you wanted to keep them for any reason. I figured it would save you some trouble if you did. Either way, that barrier did quite a job on your wing. You should be fine, though. I have a special burn ointment that I put on it. It worked far better than it ever has. You should be able to fly by morning. In fact—"
"Human, what are you doing?" C'sel interrupted, snorting smoke. "Who gave you permission to touch me?" To show her distaste of the human, she shook her head, shaking the dirt free from her scales. She then righted herself, ignoring the pain as much as possible.
The man made a vague attempt to wipe the dirt that had just rained down on his head and walked over to his fire to stir something in a kettle over it. "I'm sorry, ma'am, I didn't think you would mind if I was helping you. My apologies." He bobbed his head in that irritating human manner. C'sel would never understand why they did that.
"Hmm, well, I suppose I can forgive you, but if you ever touch me again..." She left the unspoken threat hang in the air. Sniffing indignantly, she tried to look regal and important. She then sniffed the air again. Something smelled good, and, she noticed for the first time, she was hungry. She eyed the kettle suspiciously and sniffed again.
"Hungry?" the impossible man asked as he continued to stir the contents of the kettle. If C'sel was not mistaken, a sparkle of amusement shone in his eyes. "I would offer you some of this, but there's hardly enough for myself. I doubt a dragon could be filled off my meager meal."
C'sel snorted, a stream of flame shooting into the air. She tried to flap her wings, but her left wing was stiff and still caused her some pain. "I suppose I will have to do something drastic if I plan on eating any time soon. Ugh, humans." She tested her legs and found them to be working well enough. She was stiff all over, it seemed. Standing, she began to work the magic of dragons. She used the tip of her tail to draw in the dirt before her. She drew intricate patterns, objects that resembled spider webs. She inspected her work, finding it to her liking. She then blew a steady stream of flame into the center of it. The lines in the dirt began to glow and sparkle. Finally, they began to move, sliding along the ground like a snake away from the fire. Hidden in the tall grass, she did not see what they did with her eyes, but rather with her mind. Finally, the magic finished and two cows mooed tiredly in the grass.
The light red dragon nearly laughed at the reaction of the human. He was standing wide eyed beside his kettle, mouth hanging open. "I had no idea you could do that," he whispered. "Dragons are far more powerful than the stories say. It took far more intelligence than they give you credit for. I am ashamed for believing them."
"That is only because the dragons of lower rank are far less educated than we of royal blood. They only know how to use their size, not how to control the elements." She snorted, smoke drifting lazily from her nostrils. "I'm the only royal dragon who dares venture into other lands," she added proudly.
The human tilted his head and looked at her, trying to determine something. He shrugged after a moment and ladled some of the contents of the kettle into a bowl. "I propose we eat, now," he said, pointing at the cows with his spoon.
C'sel lifted her chin slightly, a dragon's way of showing contemplation. This human had been smart enough to not remind her that her adventurous spirit had nearly gotten her killed. She was slowly, grudgingly beginning to respect this human. Maybe humans had more brains than she gave them credit for. Maybe.♱¸¸·´¯`·.¸¸♱¸¸·´¯`·.¸¸♱¸¸·´¯`·.¸¸♱¸¸·´¯`·.¸¸♱¸¸·´¯`·.¸¸♱¸¸·´¯`·.¸¸♱¸¸·´¯`·.¸¸♱¸¸·´¯`·.¸¸♱
The smell of smoke caused C'sel to sneeze, waking her up from a peaceful sleep. Lifting her head lazily, C'sel looked around to find the source of the irritation. The sun was beginning to rise. Tendrils of smoke floated lazily into the air some distance away. The sound of frantic humans could be heard on the wind. "It would appear that one of your fragile dwelling places has managed to catch fire without my aid." C'sel yawned.
The only response to her observance was the sound of rustling material. Inspecting the place the human had made his bed a few hours earlier, she found it to be empty. He was throwing all his belongings into his pack. "You will forgive me for leaving you in such a manner, but I must see what I can do to help," he said as he straitened and began to walk away.
C'sel stopped him with her tail. "You realize that by the time you get there, the fire will have destroyed that structure and been put out, or there will be nothing to return to because all the buildings around it will have been destroyed. There is no reason to waste your energy. When things like that happen to dragons, we let them take care of their own problems. It saves everyone trouble and keeps everyone happy." C'sel was not even sure why she was bothering to talk to the human, but she felt that letting the man leave on such a futile mission was worse than making contact with him.
The human sighed and was silent. He did not turn to look at her when he finally spoke again. "Humans are different. I have to go, even if I don't get there in time to do anything. I don't care. I have to at least try to get there in time." With that, he continued on toward the village.
C'sel marveled, again, at the stupidity of humans and called after him. "If you feel that you must be there to help those other humans, then at least let me get you there in time." Both the human and dragon were surprised by what she said, the human was more interested in the fire than in her sudden change of heart towards him.
C'sel lifted him up onto her back, grumbling all the while about having lost her mind. She flapped her wings, trying to loosen them up as much as possible before taking off. She was not even sure she could get off the ground much less fly the human to the village. As she pumped her wings, she felt strength in them that she did not think could be there. She attributed it to her nap and leapt into the air, a shout from the general direction of her back telling her the human had not been prepared.
The young red dragon soared in the air for five long minutes before coming within sight of the fire. C'sel was almost afraid her passenger would leap off her back before she had the chance to land. Finding a clearing near the location of the fire, she circled to slow down. Her wing began to ache during the decent, and she nearly lost her footing when she touched the ground. Gaining her balance, she got as close to the ground as possible so the human could climb off her back.
The human practically flew away from her. He leapt off her back and ran the instant his feet found purchase in the dust. C'sel watched as the humans frantically dumped buckets of water on the burning building. She sighed. "Stupid humans. They don't even know how to put out a simple fire." Even as she thought this, the human she had carried started to shout, ordering the people around. They looked at him in confusion, then leapt to do what he commanded. It was not long before the fire was completely out and the people were finding a place for the family who had once lived in the smoldering pile of timber.
The human separated from his human companions and approached C'sel. He was covered in ash and soot and smelled like he had been in the fire, not trying to put it out. They said nothing, just inspected each other. Finally, the human spoke.
"Thank you, dragon, for bringing me here. Without you, I wouldn't have been able to help that family." He bowed slightly in thanks. His eyes were moist, though whether it was the smoke or if he was about to cry, C'sel could not tell.
She also did not care. "You're welcome, human. I— I'm glad I could help." She swallowed and turned away. "Oh, and, uh, thank you for helping me. Without your aid, I may not have survived the night." With that, she leapt into the air. She wanted away from the humans, away from the smell of smoke, but most of all, she wanted away from the one human that had changed her view of humans. She could not see them as mindless or savages, not after watching them work so hard for a lost cause.
"They may not be incredibly intelligent, but they are pretty smart," she thought as she began her long flight home.
