Three of the chuunin from the Village hidden in the Sand were gathered. Several were away of missions. Those gathered in the room were confused about the secrecy of their calling. They had each received a message telling them to meet in Uindo's office that afternoon, yet they had not been told why.
"What is going on? Ikasu still needs my help before the Exams! I can't exactly train him when I'm waiting on Uindo-sama," one of them complained loudly.
"Yosai-chan, please. You know as well as the rest of us that Uindo is a very busy man!" another replied, resting her hands on Yosai's shoulders.
"I still don't like it, Hizoku-chan," Yosai said grumpily. She and Hizoku continued to talk with each other for a while, forgetting about their silent companion.
Drenen sat quietly in the corner of the room. Uindo had told him to remain silent about the kidnapping of Shiyuu's team. He was having a hard time doing so, but managing fairly well. Finally, Uindo entered the room.
Uindo ignored all the questions that the two kunoichi flung at him. He sat down at his desk and rummaged through a pile of papers sitting on his desk. The curious chuunin realized they were wasting their breath and sat impatiently in some chairs in front on the kazekage's desk. The Sand leader was a mess. His hair was sticking out at odd angles, his face pale from stress, and he was covered in dust. The three chuunin in the room looked at each other in alarm. Uindo never looked like that unless something had happened. Drenen groaned and seemed to shrink in his chair. Uindo spent a few more minutes organizing papers, then finally set them down.
"It appears that there is a new group of ninja we have to deal with. They use dishonest tactics and surprise. Here is a description of who I believe we are looking for." He handed each of the shinobi a small stack of papers and leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes, waiting for the questions to reappear.
After skimming her stack, Yosai looked at Uindo in confusion. "Where in the world did you get these, Uindo-sama? These profiles are at least thirty years old!"
Sighing, he leaned forward and explained, "Shiyuu-chan went out to train with Haipa, Kanojo, and Sachi for the chuunin exams. They were outside the walls working when they were attacked by nine jounin." He paused and looked at each of the other shinobi in the room. The kunoichi were gazing in shock while Drenen just moaned again. "In the end, Shiyuu-chan was injured badly. That's the good news."
"What do you mean, 'that's the good news'?" the kunoichis yelled at the same time. Shiyuu was a good friend of Yosai and Hizoku. Also, they had both, at one time, been the three younger girls' teachers and still felt protective.
Uindo had known this would happen and was prepared. "Kanojo, Haipa, and Sachi were defeated and taken away. Shiyuu was unable to help them because most of the jounin were fighting her. She barely made it back inside the Village. I've been speaking with her this afternoon, trying to figure out who attacked them. Those profiles are the ones she identified as their attackers."
"But, how come these are so old? Wouldn't they have been hunted down already, these missing nin?" Hizoku asked. She looked at Uindo and added, "And why are you so dirty?"
The first hint of a smile appeared on Uindo's face since he had come in the room. "I had to dig through a lot of boxes in some deep, dark, scary places for those profiles. Those ninja are some of the best jounin there have ever been, almost as large as the Akatsuki were, and definitely more skilled. As impossible as it seems," he added, seeing the shocked looks on their faces. "These jounin were once well known in their day. There were eight original members.
"Hitotsu was the leader of the group. His pale gray eyes gave him the ability to see a few moments into the future, thus allowing him to avoid being injured, a good thing for him because he was very frail and was often sick. He was extremely smart, able to come up with elaborate plans that allowed the other seven members to use their strengths and achieve their goals.
"The next was Futatsu. He had a strange connection to the moon. At night, he seemed to turn invisible. His chakra even seemed to disappear, making him untouchable at night. He wasn't very smart, but he was definitely strong. In fact, he could enter people's minds and give them momentary lapses into nightmares.
"Third was Mittsu, the leader of the three Tenso, a group of three kunoichi who specialized in elemental fighting. Mittsu has the ability to control anything to do with the earth. She can sense the vibrations that are caused when one touches the ground. She can tell where everything is up to a mile away as long as it is on the ground.
"Then there was Yottsu. He, unlike Futatsu, had a special link with the sun. During the day he could harness the light given off by the sun and use it as a weapon. He had a special hilt that he would attach the light to, creating a burning sword of light called Ranpu Hyoujin that could not be dodged when it was used at close range.
"Fifth was Itsutsu. With the ability to control fire, the second member of the Tenso had two sword hilts without a physical blade. She could create fire at will in the palms of her hands and often transferred that flame to the hilts, creating a pair of blazing swords called Kasai Toujin.
"Mittsu, the third member of the Tenso, controlled water. She was able to create many different types of weapons by freezing water into any shape she wanted: kunai, shiruken, katanas, pretty much anything. She was the weakest of the Tenso, but still posed a threat to even the strongest of chuunin and many jounin.
"Sebum was an odd fellow, rather lethargic about his work yet was able to step up to the plate when necessary. He specialized in summoning justsu, especially those involving plants. He would often summon a large plant with poisonous thorns that would simply eat him opponents. He was extremely bright, yet was often asleep during missions, so few people knew about him.
"Finally is Yatsu. He was the least skilled of the Hakumei in terms of ninjutsu. Yatsu specialized in taijutsu. His weapons were two large blades that he wore strapped to his back. He wasn't too smart, so he was basically a physical tool for the other, smarter members.
These shinobi were all a part of the Hakumei, a group notorious for their misdeeds. Using the skills and abilities of the members, they would often pull off amazing yet evil feats." Uindo ran his hand through his hair and sighed.
"They may be powerful, but I'm sure we can find them and defeat them!" Yosai said enthusiastically.
Hizoku had been flipping through the profiles of the Hakumei while listening to Uindo. She set the papers on the desk and looked Uindo in the eye. "That's all well and good, but you just used the passive tense for all of that. That means that they are no longer together or alive."
Smiling again, Uindo replied, "There's a reason you're chuunin, Hizoku-chan. You're right, they are no longer among the living, or so we thought. Twenty-five years ago there was one great fight between the Hakumei and the greatest ninjas from the Hidden Villages. Most of them were killed, wihle only Mittsu and Sebum managed to escape. After the battle, the bodies of the six dead Hakumei were disposed of by those involved in the fight. Afterwards, they went out in search of the other two, who had been badly injured during the fight. Those two were never found."
The three chuunin stared at Uindo in silence. The Kazekage had lost his mind.
"I feel like I'm talking a lot," he complained as he stood up and leaned against the window sill, watching the birds flying in the air. "Shiyuu swears that those were the jounin that attacked them. The jutsus were right and so were the appearances."
"But," Drenen said, the first thing he had spoken since Shiyuu first returned to the village. "Not only did you say that six of them were killed, you said that nine jounin attacked her team, not eight."
"Yes, I did say that, didn't I?" Uindo laughed, turning back around. "Well, you heard as well as I did that there were only eight Hakumei and nine ninja that attacked Shiyuu and her team. The ninth member should look familiar to any of you who know anything about infamous missing nin." Handing each of the three another sheet of paper, he continued, "Futokutei, a master of wind, appears to have joined the fray. He favored using wind to create whirlwinds that would pick up kunai and shiruken and other sharp objects and surround then opponent with this small twister. It was a painful attack that often killed the victim within minutes."
"This one is dead, too, it appears," Yosai remarked.
Nodding, Uindo explained, "He was captured by Glacier over fifteen years ago. As you can see, this is going to be a very interesting experience, trying to rescue our genin."
"I'll say," moaned Drenen. "Not only do we have very few chuunin to help us, and no jounin, we are fighting dead people."
"Now, don't sound so upset about it," Uindo chippered happily. "We now have the unique job of defeating some of the most feared ninja the world has known!"
Hizoku and Yosai looked at each other despondantly. He really had lost his mind.
"Uindo-sama, you realize that dead people can't come back to life, right?" Hizoku said.
"Under normal circumstance, no, they don't. However," Uindo said, calming down. "I'm sure you all know what people like Shiin from Shadow are able to do with corpses."
"But," Hizoku said, massaging her temples. "If they were really killed, their bodies would have been destroyed by the ANBU."
"That's where we hit some snags," Uindo sighed, collapsing into his chair. "All of these people have either had their bodies disposed of by ANBU forces. How they have all been brought back is a complete mystery."
"And we're gong to have to find the answer to this mystery and rescue our missing genin at the same time," Drenen said, sadly.
"Exactly," said Uindo. "And according to what they told Shiyuu-chan while they were fighting, we only have until sunrise tomorrow before they are killed."
