Actually not really. That's the english use of the word. Otaku means home, so in japan it's used for someone who sit's homw all day being a nerd.

It's basically a word that anime nerd maniacs use to criticize those who are not as obsessed as them.

I am definitely not. I've seen less than 10 anime and am really not all that interesting in Japanese Animation in general. Just a few select interesting shows.
