PeinQ Needs Algebra Help FAST!!!!

Does anyone have the time to kind of explain to me the distributive property since I couldn't get the chance to ask my algebra teacher today? I know I'm stupid, but I'm only in eighth grade, and I seriously did NOT understand what he was saying.

a(b+c) = ab + ac

You put the thing on the outside to both parts xD

I learned in french so my terms aren't the best in english

This won't be that great of an explanation but I will try my best.

3(4x-5)

Multiply the 3 by EVERYTHING in the parenthesis. Distributute

So the answer is...12x-15

Another example would be:

-(5-32x)

Multiply -1 by EVERYTHING in the parenthesis.

The answer is: -5+32x

Okay, that stuff I get. That's not hard. Just problems like this:

2(x-y+1) or 12(1 1/4)

Stuff like that I can't figure out. I mean, I kinda get the first one, but the second is way over my head.

2x-2y+2

or

12 3

Okay, that works. But what about the second one?

For the second one make 12 a fraction to and make 1 and 1/4 an improper fraction

1 and 1/4 is actually 5/4 simplified (If you simplify 5/4 then it becomes 1 and 1/4, simplify, reduce, whatever you call it)

To make 12 a fraction take 12 and multiply it by 4.
You get 48
Now put that over 4 (This keeps it equal since if you divided the 4 you are putting 48 over you get 12 again, so you didn't change the problem itself)

48/4 X 5/4

And just do that.
Note this is kinda a longer way, but it gets the job done if you really don't know what to do.

A simpler way of course is the almighty calculator what is 5/4 or 1 and 1/4 but 1.25 afterall? 1.25X12

2 times (-y)=?
2 times 1 =?

Solve each mini problem individually before putting them together

It's unusual how you combine x and y. I don't think it's right.

It's supposed to be simplified. That part I seriously don't... oh... damn I was doing more than I was supposed to -facepalm-

We didn't have to solve them I don't think. Just rewrite them with the whatever method I mentioned above because I already forgot what it was.
