Uh, I dunno if all of this is right, but this is what my grandparents used to tell me.
Basically, St Patrick was a British guy who died on March 17th [hence it being his saint day]. Anyway, when he was a teenager he was taken prisoner by people who were stealing from his house, and they transported him to Ireland where they kept him prisoner for 10 years? ..I think. And it was then he turned to Christianity. After the 10 years [I think its around 10, may be less] he escaped and he ended up back in Britain [I dunno how haha] where he trained as a Priest. Then he was said to have had a religious experience where he dreamt God told him to go back to Ireland and he was said to have introduced Christainity to Ireland and converted many Irish people, using a shamrock to represent the Holy Trinity.
