thye are called man-holes because MEN (man kind) go into the holes into the sewer to fix things,

And I will restate my answer, it's easier for a human body to fit into a circle.
It all has to do with the human anatomy, I think.
If you look at a person from and arial veiw, they look more circular.
It also could be why when people a fat, they are called round,and are round. Not any other shape.
