Re: The Bar
muku had to write a HUGE essay....
- Spoiler:
ESSAY
The life of Olaudah Equiano, a slave.
Michael
The main view of this essay is not only to describe the brutality of slavery, But also to show the difference in the level of horror displayed by olaudah equiano’s different captors.
It is my opinion that slavery is a justfully outlawed practice but the reader may find- like myself – that the inexcusable living condition of Africa’s slave trade seems only a comfort compared to the vile workings of the “slave ship”.
Equiano’s treatment in Africa began with his capture that took place in his home village:” they stopped our mouths and ran off to the nearest woods”.
After his inhumane capture from his village he was separated from his sister and sold to his first master:” I was only employed working his bellows”. But his treatment wasn’t entirely horrid:” the people I was sold to used to carry me on their back when I was very tired”.
Once his previous masters had no use for him he was sold to one of the most grizzly examples of slavery in his time, the slave ship:” I received such a salutation to my nostrils as I had never experienced in my life so that with the loathsomeness of the stench and crying together, I became so sick and low that I was not able to eat”.
Once he refused sustenance:” on my refusing to eat, one of them held me fast by the hands and laid me across, I think, the windlass, and tied my feet while the other flogged me severely” the experience on the slave ship was cruel and disturbing.
In comparison the treatment in Africa was preferable to the grotesque manner of the slave ship. For instance in Africa:” I never saw any ill treatment except tying to keep slaves from running”.
But on the slave ship:” one particular white man I saw, when we were permitted to be on deck, flogged so unmercifully with a large rope near the foremast that he died in consequence of it”.
In Africa he had at least some chance at good experiences:” I first tasted sugar cane here”.
Yet in the captivity of the slave ship:” children were almost suffocated in the filth of the necessary tubs”.
It is my opinion that Africa was horrible for equiano but the slave ship was even more so as apparent by the previous information, concluding the essay.
