I think they're the same o-o; I know that in Cerulean Cave you can get Mewtwo, and I think Mew is just roaming around Kanto. Kind of like, you can get the one of the three legendary dog pokemon (Suicune, Entei, and Raikou) once you get past the E4. Which one depends on your starter pokemon.

I never have much trouble 'cause of my sad habit of having one uber strong Pokemon and a bunch of backup Pokemon. When/if my main Pokemon dies, I throw out a backup Pokemon and revive my main. xD;
