    Post by spyke543 Thu Jul 16 2009, 20:05

    Hey you guys.

I was wondering what books might be good for a 17 year old male.

Haha. I'm asking this because I hate reading, first of all. And I don't want to fall behind in school like I've been doing for the past God knows how long. Everytime we have to read a book in school, I read about a chapter or two, then quit it. Also, I hope that reading a book for fun would help out my SAT scores. (I got a 490 in critical reading.)

So yeah, any suggestions (besides Harry Potter, Twilight) would be awesome.

    Oh!

I know some great non fiction books if you like either history or politics!

But likely you don't and want a fantasy sci fi thriller to keep you entertained with a dry moral message.

    Everyone says to read classics. o__o;
Isn't it easier to just to a lot of practice tests?

    WTF?!?! Really? Excited

Well! I know a lot of different books you might like. The good things about Politics books is they challenge your analysis. ^_^

I suggest "Somebody's gotta say it" by Neal Boortz. He's very controversial. But he's neither Republican or Democrat so you don't have to worry about that. He's libertarian. And its a pretty interesting introduction book for someone not aware of politics. Titaniumvx read it when I recommended for her to read a politics book and she really learned a lot from it and liked it.

    Just a thought.

Children of Hurin by J.R.R. Tolkien. Drool.

    The Road by Cormac McCarthy.

    Life of Pi.

Neil Stephenson writes some good cyberpunk if you're into that kind of thing...

Then there's the classic stuff (Lord of the Flies, Ulysses, 1984 etc etc), and the REAL classics like The Odyssey, Oedipus Rex, Shakespeare, and all those Greek philosopher guys...

Shakespeare's goodeth if you like reading stuffeth like thateth. I love Shakespeare, but sometimes it gets confusing. Eth.

I read really trippy books like 13 Reasons Why and As Simple As Snow, so I don't have a broad reading range.

James Patterson's a good author, and so is Chris Crutcher. Sherman Alexie's my favorite, but you might not like the stuff he writes (Native American fiction, though I do recommend Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian if you're interested).

I just got my AP results back for English Literature and managed to get a 5 and the only thing I write about in books, novels, anime (Bleach), and the like is symbolism.

If you can understand symbolism you'll be alright in reading.

People seem to mistake the idea that fiction books are all that are out there. Then they get discouraged when they realize 95% of fiction is plain and boring and don't read.

    It's sad.
