:O Situation

So my Creative Writing Teacher made us stand up and talk for a minute about ourselves (like a greeting or whatever.) and she tells my class, which is her 3rd hour about a kid in her earlier class that stood up and said something that made her feel disrespected.

Now, she was very upset and not sure if she was right or not when she yelled at him but this is what he said after standing up,

"Hello my name is (insert name here) and I'm a homophobic."

She said that after he said that she couldn't focus on anything else because, to her, she felt that he shouldn't have said it because he didn't know who was in the class and if they were homosexuals or not so that could have been a direct hit to them and make them feel unsafe.

But he countered by saying, "Well I didn't say I was going to go out and hurt them, I just stated that I was a homophobic."

Well, he got suspended.

Then as she told us about it, she claimed that she was feeling regretful and maybe she shouldn't have went that far about it.

And a girl in my class made a good observation. The girl said that it was just as bad as standing up and going, "I don't like Black people."

But I'm thinking like, How can you compare Racism with that?

Anyway, I just want to know your opinions on this because she was SUPER upset when we came in and her eyes looked red and stuff and we discussed it in class like the whole hour.

Was she right when she yelled at him and suspended him?

That's stupid.

You know it's funny in the Constitution they talk about the Right to free speech.

It's in shambles.

Personally a person could tell me they don't like black people. I'd think they were an idiot, but so what? Don't we have rights to be idiots in America?

I would ask to leave that teacher's class.

I dont think he should have gotten suspended. I mean, i think it was stupid he blurted it out like that, but, i mean come on.

He does have a right to voice his opinion.

there are a bunch of homophobes in this world, she cant just suspend a kid cuz he was being honest. that was being unfair, did the school actually let her suspend him?

If I had been the teacher I would have done it like this

"Okay well try and be respectful to others with differing views."

That would have been the ultimate punishment that kid should have gotten.

Does a homosexual get that offended when someone goes I am homophobic? I mean I don't get offended when someone says there an atheist. Now if he had said something against Homosexuals like they were stupid I could see it more but, that's not what he did.

I am in Creative Writing 4 (They decided not to put me in 2 or 3 so...Weird)

And personally it's a useless subject. I haven't learned anything...Nope.

Take Speech that'd be so much more useful....

I mean it depends. I'd be to scared I'd be next plus I wouldn't be able to take the way she treated that kid.

For one; People who are racism are IGNORANT. I mean, why hate someone for something they can't control?
Being prejudice against homosexuals is just as bad but at least they have a choice to hide their homosexuality or not (not saying you should) but you can't hide skin color.

Being "Prejudiced" against homosexuals is very different

Personally I feel homosexuality is wrong. It doesn't match up with my ethics and core values.

Should I be suspended too nejifan? Am I as bad as a racist? Oh and no, I am not a homophobe. I have gay friends. And I don't think I have a right to tell them not to be, never quoted the Bible at them. And I don't fear or hate them...Just not a fan.
