first you add 3a to each side so it ends up
ab=5+3a
than divide each side by a so it is
b=5+2a
basically that seems to be the fartest you can go
When you said divide each side by a, I lost you. Sort of.
Isn't it...
b=5/a+3 ?
I am super lost.

Yes, it would be. He must have made a mistake.

Re: Math
I have no clue what ama did, so this is what I would do o.oTitaniumxvx wrote:First Math Problem!
I'm doing some Algebra right now but don't know what to do:
Find b:
ab-3a=5
I know you divide the whole thing by a but then what?
(ab-3a)/a=5/a
Which simplifies to b-3=5/a
And then you add 3 to each end
b=5\a + 3
which means ama messed up somewhere ._.

no, you have ab=5+3a
you want to get the b alone
so divide each side by a will isolate the b
on the other side you have 5+3a. When you divide that by a you will get 5+2a. The five won't get affected, but the 3a will go down to 2a

EEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Wrong, 'materasu. It doesn't work that way. You have to divide all terms by the a. And if you have a over a, it cancels each other out so you get 3.
how on earth did you get into the advanced math course?

Re: Math
ab-3a=5
add 3a to both sides
so now, its:
ab=5+3a
Now i think you subtract a from both. i dont remember much algebra....
b=5+2a
same as ama said.

you don't separate the 3a into 3+a
what are you thining?
3+a is totally different than 3a

Re: Math
ab-3a=5
Since -3a is a term, you can move it to the other side of the equation through addition. It's like having 2x-5=5y-3: You can move the terms to either side.
So we have ab=5+3a
Now, we want to isolate b. Since the value of a is multiplied by the value of b, if you divide b by the value of a you will isolate b, but you must do the same to all terms on both sides of the equations. And so, you get five over a, and by dividing a from 3 a, which is basically the value three multiplied by a, the a will be canceled out from this term.
b=5/a+3
Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

no because you have 5+3a
divide 3a by a doesn't give you 3+a it gives you 2a

I was thinking of substracting
so
ab-3a=5
ab=5+3a
b=5+3a/a
b=5+3
_____
|b=8|
