"I'm looking through you, where did you go
I thought I knew you, what did I know
You don't look different, but you have changed
I'm looking through you, you're not the same
Your lips are moving, I cannot hear
Your voice is soothing, but the words aren't clear
You don't sound different, I've learned the game.
I'm looking through you, you're not the same
You're thinking of me, the same old way..."
Neji quirked an eyebrow, and looked at his old friend.
"You mean to tell me, that you have no place to stay?" Neji paused, crossing his arms over his chest. "Why wouldn't you have a place to stay?"
Tenten sighed, and sat at the base of the tree - she had been leaning on. Neji sat next to her, still waiting for her to answer. She shook her head lightly, before saying, "I have nowhere to go...I just...Maybe later. I'll tell you later."
He noticed the way Tenten's breathing hitched, after he had asked her that question. He noticed, how her aura seemed to cloud over. With what, he wasn't entirely sure of.
Neji shrugged his shoulders. He looked at Tenten, who seemed to be deep in thought - judging by the way she was staring at her hands.
He had never noticed how much she had matured, since meeting her at the age of 12. After seven years of friendship, it finally struck him how much she had actually matured - physically, and mentally as well. Her hair had taken on a darker tone of brown, her eyes gave the tiniest hint of yearning.
"Your father," Tenten spoke quietly. "Do you remember anything about him?"
Neji's hands clenched into fists, surprised that Tenten would even ask such a question. He nodded his head, and sighed. "I remember a lot. It's irrelevant though. I mean, unless you're trying to make small talk?"
Tenten was glad that the sun had just set. But then again, Neji rarely missed anything with his eyes.
"No. It's not small talk," Tenten rested her back against the tree. "I always wondered what it was like, to have a mother and father. I was the only three year old who, instead of playing marbles or something, imagined what her parents looked like. Kind of pathetic, now that I think about it."
Neji just looked at her. He knew she had never met her parents. And he also knew, that she had only mentioned her parents once. Which was when they were 15, and Tenten was teasing Lee. She had only said, "Atleast my parents don't have two caterpillars on their faces." And even then, that wasn't much.
But he had never known, that it hurt her this much.
"Why would you say that's pathetic?" Neji asked.
"Kids are supposed to have imaginary friends. Not imaginary parents." Tenten's voice cracked.
Neji rested a hand on her back, reassuring her that it was OK to cry.
"That doesn't mean your life is meaningless." Neji replied truthfully.
"Then who do I matter to? Whose life do i give meaning to? Because I can honestly say, that my whole existance feels meaningless to me."
Neji felt as if someone had punched his chest, as Tenten said that. Deep inside, he knew why those words had hurt him. He just needed to make that reason known.
"Don't say things like that." Neji said, his hand still resting on her shoulder.
Tenten felt a tear run down her cheek. Before she knew it, tears were streaming down her face - as she sat in total silence.
Neji lifted his hand, that was on her shoulder, and brushed away a few of her tears with his thumb. She lifted her gaze to meet his. He gazed back at her.
He cupped her chin in one hand, looked her in the eyes, and said, "You mean the world to me."
Without giving it a second thought, he leaned forward and gently kissed her.
A few moments later, he pulled away and looked at her. She looked at him nervously.
He put his arms around her, and rested his chin on her head.
"Life itself doesn't have to make sense, for someone to give it meaning." he said softly.
